Cochrane (1775-1860), 10th Earl of Dundonald, was born in Lanarkshire and raised in Culross, Fife. He gained fame as a brilliant naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars until being dismissed after a financial scandal. Cochrane then became a hero in South America by using his talents to aid independence movements in Peru and Chile. He commanded the Brazilian fleet from 1822, driving out the last of the Portuguese, and was made Marquess of Maranhão in 1823 by the Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro I. He later went on to aid the Greeks in their war of liberation against the Ottoman Empire.
