IN18A - Alastair Robin McGlashan

The Rev Alastair Robin McGlashan (1933–2012) went to India in 1963 under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society to lecture at the Theological College, Tirunelveli, and later Madurai, South India. He became fluent in Tamil, using it with his students. The Periya Puranam, a 6th-8th century account of Tamil saints, impressed him, revealing universal truths about faith. When he returned to England he worked as an analytical psychologist and an Anglican priest. His love of all things Tamil led him to translate into English the Tamils’ national epic, the Periya Puranam of Chekkitar, or History of the Holy Servants of the Lord Siva.

IN18A Alasdair Robin MacGlaisein
Chaidh an t-Urramach Alasdair Robin MacGlaisein (1933–2012) do na h-Ìnnseachan ann an 1963 fo stiùir Comann nam Miseanaraidhean Eaglais a dh’òraideachadh sa Cholaiste Diadhachd ann an Tirunelveli agus an uair sin Madurai anns na h-Ìnnseachan a Deas. Thàinig e gu bhith fileanta ann an Tamil, ga chleachdadh leis na h-oileanaich aige. Thug Periya Puranam, cunntas air naomhan Tamil sa 6mh-8mh linn, buaidh air a’ foillseachadh fìrinnean cruinneil mu chreideamh. Nuair a thill e a Shasainn, bha e ag obair mar shaidhc-eòlaiche bun-rannsachail agus mar shagairt Anglach. Mar thoradh air a’ ghràdh a bh’ aige do gach nì Tamil, lean e gu eadar-theangachadh gu Beurla air a’ mhòr-dhàn nàiseanta Tamil, Periya Puranam of Chekkitar, no Eachdraidh Searbhanatan Naomh an Tighearna Siva.
