NZ06a - Selina Sutherland

Selina Sutherland,a crofter’s daughter from Loth, Sutherland, had no formal nursing training, but developed a reputation as a competent healer. In 1862 she emigrated to New Zealand and was instrumental in the foundation of the first hospital in Masterton, which still bears her name. On a trip to Melbourne she became aware of the plight of homeless children in the city, and made it her mission to help. After working with the Neglected Children’s Society, she was recognised as the first “child rescuer”. She established the Sutherland Home for Neglected Children; a contribution recognised at Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

NZ06A Selina Shutharlanach
Cha robh trèanadh foirmeil banaltramachd sam bith aig Selina Shutharlanach, nighean croiteir à Loth ann an Cataibh, ach fhuair i cliù mar neach-slànachaidh comasach. Ann an 1862, rinn i às-imrich gu Sealainn Nuadh agus bha i na meadhan air a’ chiad ospadal a stèidheachadh ann am Masterton, air a bheil a h-ainm gus an latha an-diugh. Air turas gu ruig Meall Bùirn, ghabh i mothachadh do shuidheachadh chloinne gun dachaigh anns a’ bhaile, agus chuir ri roimhpe an cuideachadh. An dèidh a bhith ag obair le Comann Dearmad Chloinne, bha i air a h-aithneachadh mar a’ chiad “sàbhalaiche chloinne”. Stèidhich i Dachaigh Shutharlanch na Cloinne Dhearmaidte; nì a fhuair aithneachadh aig Iubalaidh Daoimein na Banrigh Bhioctòiria.
