PT01 - John Drummond

Stitchers: Margaret Ferguson Burns (Edinburgh); Anna Denise Hogarth (née de Mello)

John Drummond belonged to an illustrious family with royal connections, but clearly possessed an adventurous spirit and was destined to make a name for himself outside of Scotland. Probably born around 1400, he was off seeking glory in France by his late teens before moving on to Portugal. In 1424 this young Scottish knight was amongst the first settlers to sail from mainland Portugal to the island of Madeira. Here he became known simply as João Escórcio (John the Scot), and after marrying Branca Affonso initiated a considerable line of Drummond descendants in Portuguese territory. John died on Madeira around 1464.

PT01 Iain an t-Albannach: Iain Druimeanach
Bhuineadh Iain Druimeanach do theaghlach cliùiteach le ceanglaichean rìoghail, ach bha e gu soilleir le spiorad làidir siubhail agus e an dàn dha ainm a chosnadh dha fhèin taobh a-muigh Alba. Thathar am beachd gun d’ rugadh e mu 1400, agus bha e air falbh a’ sireadh saoghal ùr san Fhraing agus e dìreach na dheugair mus do ghluais e air adhart gu ruig Portagail. Ann an 1424, bha an ridire òg Albannach seo am measg a’ chiad luchd-tuineachaidh a sheòl bho thìr-mòr Phortagail gu Eilean Madeira, air bòrd bàta-siùil João Gonçalves Zarco. Bhàsaich a chiad bhean, Catarina Vaz, ga fhàgail le aon nighean, agus an dèidh dha Branca Affonso a phòsadh, lean e air adhart a’ cruthachadh loidhne chudromach de shliochd Drummond/ Escórcio. Bhàsaich Iain ann am Madeira mu 1464.
