(Porto)

Although the English rather than Scottish market favoured port, the trade in the nineteenth century was dominated by Scottish businesses. Sandeman wines was established in 1790 by George Sandeman from Perth, trading in port and sherry from a coffee house in London. Five years later he had a base in Cadiz and by 1811 purchased a cellar for ageing at Villa Nova de Gaia in Portugal. The port was carried to the coast by a type of boat called a rabelo, as shown here. Sandeman’s customers became accustomed to their pioneering branding and trademarks, for which they are still famed today.

PT02 Seòras Sandeman
Ged a b’ fheàrr leis a’ mhargaid Shasannach port seach a’ mhargaid Albannach, b’ ann aig gnothachasan Albannach a bha làmh-an-uachdar
air malairt san naoidheamh linn deug. Chaidh fìon Sandeman a stèidheachadh ann an 1790 le Seòras Sandeman à Peairt, a’ malairt port agus searaidh bho thaigh cofaidh ann an Lunnainn. Còig bliadhna às dèidh sin, bha àite aige ann an Cadiz agus ann an 1811 cheannaich e seilear airson a bhith ag aoiseadh aig Villa Nova de Gaia ann am Portagail. Bhathar a’ giùlain a’ phuirt gun chosta ann an seòrsa de bhàta ris an canaist rabello, mar a chithear an seo. Dh’fhàs luchd-ceannach Sandeman cleachdte ri am branndadh tùsail agus an comharran-malairt, do bheil e cliùiteach gus an latha an-diugh.
