US22 - John Muir: John of the Mountains

Stitcher (Graton, California): Terry Hallowes

John Muir’s writing’s spurred a nation to action. His descriptions of lofty sequoias and jagged glaciers convinced readers of the need for conservation. A potent combination of science and poetry, Muir’s writing continues to connect millions of people to the beauty of nature. He spent long hours writing in his “scribble den” in Martinez, California. Palm trees frame the entrance to his father-in-law’s mansion, where John lived from 1890 with his wife Louie and his children Wanda and Helen. He named the hills behind the house after the girls. Today visitors can enjoy exploring Muir’s home and orchard.

Cothlamadh cumhachdach de shaidheans agus bàrdachd, tha sgrìobhaidhean Muir a’ leantainn air adhart a’ ceangal nam milleanan de dhaoine ri bòidhchead nàdair. Chuir e seachad uairean fada de thìde a’ sgrìobhadh anns an
“scribble den” aige ann am Martinez ann an California. Tha craobhan pailme mun cuairt na slighe a-steach do dh’àros athar-cèile, far an robh Iain a’ fuireach bho 1890 còmhla ri a bhean Louie agus a chlann Wanda agus Eilidh. Dh’ainmich e na cnuic air cùlaibh an taighe às dèidh nan nigheanan. San latha andiugh, faodaidh luchd-tadhail tlachd a ghabhail à bhith a’ cuairteachadh dachaigh Iain Muir agus a’ ghàrraidh mheasan.
