The Auld Alliance and mutual wars against England ensured that there were often Scottish soldiers in arms in France during the Hundred Years War. In 1418 a large Scots force travelled to the aid of the future Charles VII, who later selected a hundred to form a personal bodyguard. This was the beginning of the Garde Ecossaise or Scots Guard, which remained a part of the royal guard throughout its history. They fought on active service as well as palace escort and guard duties. They were officially disbanded during the French Revolution, but then briefly reformed after the Bourbon restoration.

FR02 An Geàrd Albannach
Bha an t-Seann Chaidreachas agus na cogaidhean a bha na lùib an aghaidh Shasainn, a’ ciallachadh gun robh saighdearan Albannach a’ togail airm san Fhraing aig àm Cogadh nan Ceud Bliadhna. Ann an 1418, shiubhail feachd mhòr Albannach a chuideachadh Teàrlach VII, a bha gu bhith na rìgh, a thagh ceud dhiubh airson a bhith mar gheàrd phearsanta dha. B’ e seo toiseach an Guarde Ecossaise no an Geàrd Albannach, a dh’fhuirich mar phàirt den gheàrd rìoghail cho fada ’s a mhair e. Bha iad an sàs ann an seirbheis cogaidh cho math ri bhith coileanadh an dleastanasan mar fhreiceadain geàird is lùchairt. Chaidh an cur mu sgaoil gu h-oifigeil aig àm an Reabhlaid Fhrangaich, ach thàinig iad còmhla arithist airson ùine ghoirid an dèidh athstèidheachadh Bourbon.
