US18 - Andrew Carnegie



Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was born in Dunfermline in Fife but had moved to the United States by 1848. He took his first job in a Pittsburgh thread mill when just 13, before becoming a telegraph messenger on the railroads. Through hard work and motivation Carnegie went on to establish the Carnegie Steel Company and became immensely wealthy and influential. Having made his fortune he then encouraged fellow industrialist in acts of philanthropy. Carnegie certainly led by example, sponsoring libraries, museums, and trusts. Over 2,500 Carnegie libraries were built around the world between 1883 and 1929, including in his native Scotland.
