The USA celebrates the contributions of Americans with Scottish descent each year on April 6th, National Tartan Day. The date commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, itself an influence on the American Declaration of Independence. Almost half of the signatories of that Declaration were of Scottish descent, as were the governors of 9 of the 13 original states. National Tartan Day was first observed in 1997, officially recognised by the Senate the following year, to “honor Scottish heritage, tradition, and culture, representing the hundreds of thousands of Americans of Scottish descent, residing in every State”.
US24 Latha Nàiseanta an Tartain
Bidh na Stàitean Aonaichte a’ comharrachadh cuideachadh bho Aimeireaganaich le sinnsearachd Albannach gach bliadhna air 6 Giblean, Latha Nàiseanta an Tartain. Tha an ceann-latha mar chuimhneachadh air soidhnigeadh Foirgheall Obar Bhrothaig ann an 1320, sin fhèin a’ toirt buaidh air Foirgheall Neoeisimeileachd Aimeireagaidh. Bha faisg air leth a chur an ainm-sgrìobhte ris an Fhoirgheall sin bho shinnsearachd Albannach, mar a bha naoi de riaghladairean nan 13 stàitean. Chaidh Latha Nàiseanta an Tartain a chomharrachadh an toiseach ann an 1997, gu h-oifigeil air aithneachadh leis an t-Seanaid a’ bhliadhna às dèidh sin, gus “urram a thoirt do dhualchas, traidisean agus cultar na h-Alba, a’ riochdachadh nan ceudan de mhìltean de dh’Aimeireaganaich le sinnsearachd Albannach, a’ còmhnaidh anns na Stàitean”.
