Patrick Gordon (1635-1699) was born at Auchleuchries in Aberdeenshire. In 1651 he sailed for Danzig to avoid religious persecution and began a career fighting for Sweden and Poland. He was captured in battle by a Russian force led by fellow Scot, John Crawford, and accepted the offer of a Russian post. Under Tsar Aleksei I and Peter the Great, Gordon rose to the rank of general and rear admiral, fighting in the Ukraine, the Turkish wars and in the Crimea. He left a detailed diary of his life and in 1699 was buried in the first Catholic Church in Russia.
