CA34 - The Megantic Outlaw

Stitcher: Jane Loiselle (Sherbrooke, Quebec).

Donald Morrison was born to Scottish immigrants Murdo and Sophia Morrison, who settled in the Eastern Townships of Quebec in 1838. Donald, the youngest of their five sons, became known as the Megantic Outlaw while defending the family homestead from dishonest money lenders. He shot Constable Warren in self-defence in the streets of Lac Megantic. The Morrison Defence League helped him evade the law for over a year. He was shot, taken prisoner in Marsden, tried in Sherbrooke and incarcerated in Montreal. He died hours after his release from jail and is buried in Guisla Cemetery, close to his parents’ homestead.

CA34 Am Fògarrach Megantic
Rugadh Dòmhnall Moireasdan do dh’in-imrich Albannach Murchadh agus Sophia Mhoireasdan, a thuinich anns na Bailtean an Ear de Quebec ann an 1838. Bha Dòmhnall, a b’ òige de na còignear mhac aca, aithnichte mar am Fògarrach Megantic nuair a bha e a’ dìon fàrdaich an teaghlaich bho luchd-iasad airgid mì-onarach. Loisg e air Connstabal Warren agus e ga dhìon fhèin air sràidean Lac Megantic. Chuidich Lìog Dìon nam Moireasdanach e gu teicheadh bhon lagh airson còrr agus bliadhna. Chaidh losgadh air agus a thoirt am bruid ann am Marsden, chaidh fheuchainn sa chùirt ann an Sherbrooke agus a chur don phrìosan ann am Montreal. Bhàsaich e uairean a thìde an dèidh dha faighinn a-mach às a’ phrìosan agus tha e tiodhlaichte ann an Cladh Guisla (Giosladh), faisg air dachaigh a phàrantan.
